ORIGIN

  • shinrin-yoku was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive medicine

  • shinrin-yoku means ‘taking in the forest atmosphere’

  • shinrin-yoku is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments

PRACTICE

  • a slow, purposeless nature walk of less than 2 kilometres with an average duration of 2 to 3 hours

  • focusses on sensory experiences, body sensations and interaction with the surroundings

  • activates the mind that comes to peace thus recovering the body

  • cultivates stillness, awareness and deepens the connection to the present moment

  • stimulates the imagination and creativity

  • disconnects from hectic life: unplug & reset

  • is beneficial in combination with yoga, tai chi, qigong, thermal springs or breathing exercises

  • the guide offers a series of invitations which help you to slow down and activate your senses

  • the guide invites you to participate in down-to-earth experiences which restore the connection to yourself, nature and others

  • the guide is a supportive witness of these immersive experiences

  • the guide supports playfulness and self-healing

  • the ANFT guide follows a standard sequence as defined by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs

  • the ANFT guide is also certified in Outdoor First Aid and carries a first aid kit on the walks
